As you consider how to make a money making website I feel it's important to understand what your real goal is with your site. Not everybody has the same goal and this really will affect the direction you take your site from the very beginning. Let me give you a few examples of what I'm talking about.
1. What is the primary niche that your site will be in? Some niches lend themselves to better money making opportunities than others.
For example if you are developing a website that targets the home business niche you're going to be primarily focusing on programs people can join with you. This is entirely different than people who are looking at building a website focusing on content.
